About Pilates

I've taken this article from a Health and Fitness Magazine I subscribe to, its by a Personal Trainer called Jennifer Bentley.

"All types of exercise and move can have hugely beneficial effects on our mental wellness,  One activity is not necessarily better than another, its more about what works best for you.  Many people tend to opt for higher intensity exercise due to the effect of endorphins, however for others its more about how immersive and absorbing their exercise is.  The benefits from lower intensity activities like Pilates and yoga are arguably more impactful towards increasing our mental awareness over the longer term.

With its focus as much on quality of movement as on intensity of effect, Pilates prioritises a mind-body connection.  Completely immersing the body and mind in movement allows us to become and stay, completely present as we practice.  Taking our minds away from external stress and focusing on the movement - our form, breathing and movement - can have a calming, centerng and meditative effect.

Over time, and with increased practice, we can develop greater body awareness.  By helping process the sensations and emotions in our bodies (whether positive or negative), this can have significant and longer lasting mental health benefits".
