When I was younger, I used to do the legs, bums and tums, abs classes, higher intensity classes - spinning, body combat, body pump (until my knees started to hurt!), I could never imagine the day I would stop them, I loved doing them. I trained 5 times a week, and was probably the fittest I'd ever been.
And then I was in a minor car accident and hurt my back.
I had to adapt some of the exercises as best I could (this was before I became an instructor), but found I was starting to pick up more injuries, then I tried yoga (my back felt it was breaking through the whole session, I certainly didn't feel any better) and then I found pilates. This was the only exercise l found that helped my back. I do believe you should choose exercise that you enjoy and that's comfortable (to a point) for you.
I don't think the HIIT classes, insanity sessions are particularly good for the back and knees, I certainly wouldn't manage them at my grand age of nearly 56! I feel no consideration is taken for people's ages and abilities with them, and I worry about the repercussions as these people get older. I overheard a few years ago a woman on the bus (she'd have been early 40s at the time) booking her sessions, I asked how many she did a week, and it was 13 - 13!! Her poor body wouldn't have had any time to recover. I bumped into her in the changing rooms some time later, and she was complaining of all her injuries - I wonder how she is now!!
All I do now is walk (started this during lockdown and continued), pilates and sometimes some hand weights and that's it. Really how fit do you want to be? We need to look after and respect our bodies.
